Week 5

Copyright is clearly a very slippery topic, as it is about humans in the first place - and there are as many points of view as people living on the Earth. However, while reading the suggested Copyright Reform, I found the solution covering most of the problems perfectly.

I definitely agree with the Pirate Party’s 1th, 3th, 4th, and 6th ideas - in the rapidly-changing world, protection time should be decreased, and newly-suggested terms are reasonable and logical. I also agree that moral rights should be left as they are.

However, I think the second and fifth points are not rational. Speaking about 2nd point, which is “Free Non-Commercial Sharing”, this rule can be a loophole for pirates, and it can be used as an excuse for many copyright infringements. Speaking about Free Sampling, in my opinion, it can be an excuse for plagiarism, and therefore, violate the moral rights of the author. I think a written permission must be presented to those striving to use other’s parts of creation.

To sum up, the Swedish Pirate Party has done a very thorough work and reached a middle ground in a majority of gaps, but some aspects are still quite slippery.
